Ballet Instructor: Kathy Swalm
Kathy Swalm has been teaching ballet for the Brookhaven Recreation Department for 15 years. Her ballet training began in Huntsville, AL and continued in various studios throughout her life. She introduces her students to ballet using Christian praise music and classical ballets and composers. Past recital programs have included Cinderella Ballet, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Cappelia and Peter Pan. Past performances consisted of “God of all Creation”, “The Wonders of Our God”, and “A Celebration of God’s Love”.
Clogging Instructor: Robyn Breakfield
Robyn Breakfield has been clogging for 31 years. She began clogging at the age of 7 with The Southern Steppers of Collins, Ms., her hometown. In 2002 she formed the Dixieland Cloggers in Brookhaven.
Robyn has clogged with two different competitive teams and has provided her with the opportunities to travel to Hawaii and Silver Dollar City in Branson, Mo. Her daughter, Josie, will be traveling to Disney World in 2018 to clog on stage.
Clogging is great exercise and is a wonderful fun pass time for all ages. The Dixieland Cloggers have learned many routines that include country, pop, gospel. And Christmas songs. They perform at many festivals, retirement and nursing homes, fund raising events, and the state fair.
Gymnastics Instructor: Lisa Pruden
Lisa Pruden has been the Gymnastics instructor for the Recreation Department for 38 years. She has also been the instructor for First Baptist Wee Care for over 30 years, McComb Parks and Recreation, and is the owner of Lisa’s School of Gymnastics in Monticello, MS.
Her classes include a tumble class as well as a competitive gymnastics team. Gymnastics is her love and passion along with her three children and four grandchildren.
Softball/Baseball Instructor: Duane Burt
Duane Burt is a long-time member of the Brookhaven/Lincoln County community, where he and his wife, Amy, son Brandon, and daughter Layla, currently reside. Duane has obtained undergraduate and graduate degrees from Copiah-Lincoln Community College (Co-Lin) (A.A., Biology/Chemistry), the University of Southern Mississippi (B.S., Marine Biology/Chemistry), and the University of Mississippi (M.S., Drug Discovery/Pharmacology). He is employed with Co-Lin, where he serves as an instructor of Microbiology and Chemistry. Additionally, he has served as Co-Director of Health and Wellness Programs for Co-Lin, and Research Project Coordinator for King’s Daughters Medical Center (KDMC).
Duane is a certified athletic speed, agility, and conditioning instructor, and while at Co-Lin, he served as Assistant Softball Coach for over 10 years. He helped the Lady Wolves earn back-to-back MACJC South Division and State Championships (2008 and 2009), the 2008 Region 23 Championship, and finish as the 2008 NJCAA National Runners-Up.
Duane is the founder/director of Diamond Baller Athletics, which utilizes the facilities at the Hansel King Sports Complex. As the “Personal Athletic Performance Training School,” Diamond Baller Athletics offers private practice sessions, primarily for softball and baseball athletes. Students participate in a very broad range of defensive and offensive drills, speed and agility workouts, base running strategies, sliding, layouts, softball and baseball-specific conditioning, among many other practices. Duane recognizes the significance and value of all sports in our community, as well as the interest in supporting the development and enhancement of our athletes.
Piano Instructor: Vidalia Sanders
Vidalia Sanders was born and raised in Brookhaven, MS and is a 1999 graduate of Brookhaven High School. She attended the University of Mississippi where she earned a B.A in Music with an emphasis in Vocal Music and Piano. She later earned her Master's of Arts in Teaching from Mississippi College.
Ms. Sanders served as the music teacher for BHS for 5 years where she taught choir and general music and co-directed the Homecoming Production and all musicals. After leaving the High School she then went on to open her own music studio called Psalm 100 Music Studio. She is a member of Pleasant Ridge Church where she is the Music Director and is also now currently teaching piano and voice at the Brookhaven Recreation Department.

Senior Adult Director: Kail Garrett
Kail Garrett is a 2007 graduate from University of Southern Mississippi, where she majored in Therapeutic Recreation. She began working for the Brookhaven Recreation Department in 2012. In addition to being the director of the Senior Center she also coaches Adaptive Soccer and T-ball. She is married to Josh Garrett and together they have three boys.
